Solid Colored Bedding, Flexibility At Its Best

When choosing bedroom decor many are drawn to blankets and sheets full of colorful patterns and bright colors, but this is not always the best choice. Solid bedding sets can set the mood in the room just as well and allow a huge amount of diversity for future room decor changes. The key is knowing how to use sheen, texture, and variations of the same shade and knowing just what shade will really make the bed stand out.

When a pattern is placed on a bed it creates an inflexible anchor for all future decor unless the bedding is replaced. Patterns on the wall, curtains, flooring and in the other decor will clash with the bed. This leaves the designer with no other choice than monotone and often uninteresting surroundings.

Bedrooms can become a work of art when a decorator chooses solid colored bedding with complimentary colors. A classic example of this is yellow and violet; by painting the walls violet the room gets a warm feeling and the yellow bed becomes the star of the room. The two can be blended together by using a pattern on the rug, curtains and accessories. Other classic combinations are red paired with green and blue paired with orange.

If decorators want a more subtle palette they should consider different shades of the same hue. Going back to the purple example; a decorator may choose to use a dark purple on the walls, a multihued rug and curtains and light purple blankets. When using this type of theme keeps furniture and accessories extremely neutral.

When designing a one toned bed, think textures. Textures give the eye a way of providing distinction between the sheets, pillows and blankets. Use ruffled lacy materials on the throw pillows and pair it with a traditional pillow case on the rest of the pillows. These materials will make the sheen of the satin sheets look inviting. For blankets, think different patterns of knits to allow the eye to take in even more textures.

A timeless trend for bedding that will add luxury to any bedroom is to use metallics. Metal hues are so beautiful and flexible for future changes in decor, just make sure you are pairing cool metal tones with cool hues (blues and silvers) and warm tones with warm metals (reds and golds). To keep your theme going make sure all other metals in the room match the bed.

Patterned walls, curtains or throw rugs are so beautiful it seems shameful to waste it on the bedding. By surrounding the room with patterns and leaving the bed monotone the bed will stand out instead of blending in. Try picking a color out of the surrounding patterns that is not dominant. If the pattern contains red as the dominant color and smaller flecks of yellow, make the bedding yellow. It will compliment the red and the bed will really make a statement.

There are many ways to make solid color bedding pop without adding inflexible patterns. Just remember to think on the multiple levels of sheen, texture and wow factor when selecting your bedding set.
